The Island Mamma Mia Was Filmed On
Croatia Mamma Mia island name? Vis!
Vis is where Mamma Mia was filmed. Well, the second Mamma Mia film. The first film was actually filmed in Greece.
Vis is an island off the Dalmatian coast in Croatia which takes about 2.5 hours by boat from the closest city, Split. It’s the most beautiful, magical island I have ever visited and I can see why it was chosen for the filming of Mamma Mia 2 movie.
Read on for the location details because this is all about Mamma Mia 2 Vis Croatia. The real Mamma Mia Kalokairi!

How to Get to The Island of Vis Croatia Mamma Mia
The Island of Vis is located in the Adriatic Sea, 2.5 hours by ferry to mainland Croatia. The closest city is Split which is where you start to reach Vis.
There is one ferry company that runs daily journeys from Split-Vis and Vis-Split. The journey by ferry takes 2.5 hours and by catamaran just 1.5 hours. A one-way ticket costs 49 Kuna (correct at time of writing).

Mamma Mia 2 Filming Locations Vis Island
The filming locations for Mamma Mia 2 on Vis are as follows.
How to Use This Guide:
- I will list all the best locations as headings
- Then explain which scenes were filmed in these places
- Add my favourite quotes from these locations
- Then how to find them on Vis.
So exactly where did they film Mamma Mia 2?
Vis Harbour
As you know how to get to Vis, and that the only way is by ferry (unless you’re Cher, of course), the first thing you see in Vis is a Mamma Mia location!
The ferry will dock at Vis Harbour but will be full of cars, ferry-cruisers and other Mamma Mia fanatics so I’d advise to wait until it quietens down or re-visit later in the trip for the full experience of this filming location.
Here is where you see young Donna from Mamma Mia is running for the ferry, she misses it but meets Swedish Bill and his boat. You also see the scene where present-day Harry and Bill miss the ferry and reunite here.
- The harbour official prefers Donna’s hair shorter,
- He things that time has been cruel to present-day Bill,
- But age becomes Harry as it does the tree, the wine and the cheese.
One of the best place to stay near the harbour is called Corner of Joy. It’s a 9.2 rating on booking.com, within walking distance to beaches and the ‘Mamma Mia Harbour’ and has a nice name! 🙂
Trg Karolina and Dionis Pizzeria
Located in the city of Vis is the Trg Karolina (which means Karolina Square) and directly behind is Dionis Pizzeria.
Here is a film location Mamma Mia where the Greek Market shots were filmed including general shots of the market, scenes between Donna and Sam and scenes between Sam and Rosie. The square was totally transformed to resemble a blue, busy, Greek market.
The front of Dionis Pizzeria was used as a shop front where Donna gets new overalls and the stairs leading behind can clearly be seen today as they haven’t changed.
- ‘I’ve been travelling all my life’.
- ‘It’s called Karma and it’s pronounced HA’.
To get there, look directly at Vis Harbour and turn right and follow the walk around with the water to your left for a 5 minute walk until you get to a sign saying ‘Dionis Konoba’, turn right and you are directly in front of the square.
Walk through the square and you’ll find a small cover saying ‘Konoba Dionis’ and you’re here. The stairs are just to the right of this door.
Address: Ulica Matije Gupca 1, 21480, Vis, Croatia
You can actually stay in the B&B at Dionis to feel like a real life Donna at the market. Click here to see latest prices and availability at Dionis.
Church of Saint Jerome and Franciscan Monastery
Located on the Prirovo Peninsula in Vis City is a monastery and church built on ancient Roman theatre foundations. So even without being the Mamma Mia church, it’s a place worth visiting in Vis!
This is the scene where Donna and Bill are sailing and get called over by Alexio, a young Greek man, in his dinghy who asks that the pair take him to the church where his beloved, Apollonia, is supposed to marry someone else.
On the way you can see the beautiful church and monastery behind Apollonia who hears Alexio shout her name and dive in the water. She then runs from her family, and into the sea to be with him.
Note: This is not the Mamma Mia chapel where Sophie and Skye get married. That’s actually in Greece!
- ‘Apollonia’ *jumps in the sea* ‘If you love someone you’re willing to die for her’.
- ‘Yeah but you don’t have to’.
To reach the St Jerome’s Church, look directly at Vis Harbour (you will see the church in the background), turn left and follow the coast around bearing right until you reach the Prirovo Peninsula.
Once you can see the church on your left, follow the path around and you will reach the walkway where Apollonia runs (with a green post at the end). The walk from Vis Port to the church is about 10 minutes.
Note: They painted the post white for the Mamma Mia movie but it’s green now.
Address: Šetalište Apolonija Zanelle 2, 21480, Vis, Croatia
There are several apartments around the island of Vis named ‘Apartments by the Sea Vis’ but this is the closest apartment to Prirovo peninsula and the famous Mamma Mia II scene.

Stiniva Bay
Stiniva Bay is a beach in Southern Vis that was voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe in 2016.
This is the scene where Donna and Sam are out rowing/taking photos and getting to know each other on the boat within the bay.
- ‘I want to stay here, and I think you should too’
They say the best places are always hard to get to. If you want to see Stivinva Bay via the road, you must park at the top and hike 20 minutes (minimum) down to the beach.
It can also be seen by boat and is included on most of the Vis island tours.
Click here for the latest prices and availability at this holiday home in Stiniva to stay in accommodation close the stunning beach and go on your own moonlit walk.
Srebrena Beach
Srebrena Beach located on the South-East tip of Vis is a favourite among locals.
This is the Mamma Mia beach where you see Young Donna and Sam having a moonlit stroll while Donna is singing one of the moving Mamma Mia 2 songs, Andante.
Note: This is also the beach where some of the Mamma Mia 2017 cast were spotted during filming down time.
- ‘Andante, Andante, oh please don’t let me down’
To reach Srebrena Beach, your best bet is to rent a car/scooter and drive yourself there which takes just 20 minutes from Vis Harbour.

Komiza Village
Komiza Vis Mamma Mia 2 goes hand in hand with several shots throughout the film and credits being filmed in this tiny village on the Western coast of Vis Island.
The coastal shots and houses near the sea are all from this part of the island and it’s absolutely worth visiting for total serenity and, in my opinion, the best part of the island of Mamma Mia.
To get to Komiza, there are buses directly outside the Vis Harbour that are in line with the ferry times. The bus takes just 20 minutes from Vis Port to the village of Komiza Mamma Mia lovers!
Jastožera Restaurant
Jastozera Lobster Restaurant is a specific location of Mamma Mia 2 filmed in Komiza, at the East of the town.
This is the location Mamma Mia 2 movie uses as a Greek Tavern where Harry and Bill are trying to figure out how to get to Kalokairi. The scene is through a little arch looking out to sea (which if you reserve, you can also sit to enjoy dinner).
Then Alexio recognises Bill who invites him and his friends to Sophie’s party. Skye also turns up after Harry falls into the water and you see the other side of the restaurant.
- ‘Bring your wives and family’ *fishermen groan*
Go to Jastozera in Komiza to see both the interior and exterior shots from Mamma Mia Vis Croatia.
Address: Ulica Ivana Gundulića 6, 21485, Komiža, Croatia

Booking.comBarjoška Bay
Located in the North-West of Vis Island is Barjoska Bay and North of Barjoska Bay is a place called Barjaci.
This is the Dancing Queen Mamma Mia location as it is where the crew built their own wooden jetty for over 300 extras to do the Mamma Mia Dance number led by Harry, Bill, Alexio, the Fisherman (and their wives)!
This is also where Skye surprises Sophie and they share a lovely reunion in Barjoska Bay.
Unfortunately the boardwalk was taken down after the making of Mamma Mia 2 so there’s not a huge amount to see at this spot. A beautiful site though and still the actual island where Mamma Mia filmed the dance scene.
- ‘And I could only book the worst band in the world’
- ‘They’re a great band and I don’t care about any of it, you got here’
- ‘And I’m never leaving again’
Note: Barjoska Bay can only be reached by boat. Your options to see this location are to hire your own boat, take a taxi boat to and from here or take a private Vis island tour where you can choose your exact locations and you can create your own Vis Mamma Mia tour!

General Shots of Vis Island
There are general, gorgeous camera shots of Vis Island in Mamma Mia 2 and you can clearly see why this place was chosen as the filming destination. It’s truly magical on Vis.
Neighbouring Bisevo Island (where the famous Blue Cave is) can also be seen in a few wide shots.
Island of Vis Mamma Mia can be seen in the opening scene, when Sophie meets and drives Tanya and Rosie home, Donna running through the orange grove and the sailing scenes of Donna and Bill.
- ‘I’m a curious child’.
- ‘Most beautiful place in the world’.
Explore the streets, trees and hilltops like Donna did to see the beauty of this island Mamma Mia was filmed, and I fell in love with.
Mamma Mia 2 Filming Locations UK
