Exploring The Welsh Town of Narberth, Pembrokeshire Day Trip

Many of us have spent the summer of 2020 staying in our home countries which means I’ve spent mine exploring Wales and last weekend was no different when I was exploring the Welsh town of Narberth, Pembrokeshire day trip with a friend.

Narberth is located just two hours drive away from Cardiff and 20 mins inland from the popular Welsh spots of Tenby and Saundersfoot. It’s a small town offering mighty exploration days for staycation-ers! This summer I’ve felt so in touch with my Welshness by staying, buying, exploring and eating local and this was epitomised in Narberth, Pembrokeshire day trip! Shop after shop I visited was independent, regionally-grown or with a touch of locality.

I’m all for a trip to Narberth because there’s not many people around, it’s quieter than neighbouring Tenby and Saundersfoot and perfect for the social-distanced trip in Wales.

The Best Things to Do in Narberth Pembrokeshire Day Trip

Nestled in South-West Wales lives the town of Narberth and is perfect for a UK day trip, especially in this climate. They have coronavirus measures in place as per Welsh government rules and as a result, I felt safe exploring Narberth Pembrokeshire.

Narberth Shopping

The shopping scene in Narberth is on point. Every little boutique shop I visited was independently-owned or second-hand store with unique items for my own souvenirs or as quirky gifts.

Welsh Fact: Narberth is Arberth in Welsh. Which came first?!

I loved The Golden Sheaf because there is a grand building in the heart of Narberth’s high street and The Golden Sheaf gallery just across the way where you can get gorgeous paintings of Wales, Welsh Slate, love spoons and Welsh Lady dolls to name a few local souvenirs. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Narberth.

There are antique shops, second-hand stores, charity shops, independent boutiques, swimwear, Welsh gift shops, vintage outlets and other nooks and crannies.

Random Tip for Narberth: Take a towel because we looked in every shop and could not find one!

Eating is One Of The Best Things to Do in Narberth

Narberth has been described by Conde Nast as the ‘Rare bit of Wales.’

Although I didn’t find any Welsh rarebit, I did find homemade and locally-produced food everywhere on my Narberth Pembrokeshire day trip.

Fforc Deli

My morning started at Fforc, the best Welsh Deli I’ve ever been to (honestly). It’s 10am, the sun is rising on the high street and I’m sat on a bench next to the ‘Welcome to Narberth’ sign eating lobster. Who said you can’t be boujie in the country? Calm down, it was a lobster roll but a phenomenal one at that. The bread was warm and soft, the filling was moist and salty and I watched the town wake up enjoying this treat.

Back at the Deli, they have a pantry at the back full with Welsh-made products from chocolate and gin to jam and oil. I got myself a funky salt, garlic and chilli mix in a little red pot and spoon. Cute.

Here’s a map on the wall where you can see where your products have come from in Wales. Love this feature, it was the cherry on top of loving this deli. Da Iawn!

Top Joes Pizzeria – Narberth Pembrokeshire

Found in Tenby and Narberth is Top Joe’s Pizzeria so we booked a table for the evening. It’s right in the heart of Narberth’s high street, opposite the Golden Sheaf with neon signs in the window and doubles as 32 Townhouse accommodation and as a result, would be fab to stay here!

Centre Hall - best things to do in Narberth explained

The coronavirus measures made me feel safe as we signed in and were escorted to our table next to the kitchen. On the way there’s funky movie posters on the walls from the 80’s. Top Joe’s is a top restaurant in Narberth.

I am a proud starter and main girl. Always have been. But there was something about Top Joe’s that made me want to A. dive right in for a pizza and B. try their warm brownies and Pembrokeshire ice cream. And I did just that.

Honourable Mentions and Where I’ll Go Next Time

I passed homemade cakes that filled a window, reminding me of a little Australian street in St Kilda, Melbourne! There is the famous ice cream shop called Fire & Ice where I’ll go next time I’m in Narberth, Pembrokeshire.

They have a seafood place which is excellent for social distancing as you eat in a greenhouse. The entire menu is seafood/fish and is the first place I’ll eat on my return to Narberth, especially for seafood Sundays!

There are two local butchers as well as the local fruit and veg shop which exaggerates how independent and local Narberth is.

Anywhere you visit on a UK staycation, there has to be a mention of fish and chips! When I walked by, there was a queue down the street of the chippy pictured below so must be good.

Observations on a Narberth Pembrokeshire Day Trip

From the painted houses, the paintings and the street messages, I discovered that Narberth is a town of art. As I strolled through the streets, looking at the colours, people-watching and eating, the passing world was delicately locked in my gaze.

Narberth is a town of history too and they have a Gallery and Museum you can visit. Did you Know? Emmeline Pankhurst once visited Narberth around the ‘votes for women’ time!

Narberth Town Hall

I also read a humbling story about this Syrian family who moved to the small village of Narberth and how welcoming the locals were truly shows that Welshness I am proud of.

Where to Stay in Narberth Pembrokeshire

I stayed in a nearby caravan site which is ideal because it’s just a 10 minute drive into Narberth Pembrokeshire.

The best place to stay in Narberth is in the centre of town called 32 Townhouse which doubles as the pizzeria. Or Ty Waldon which is also centre of Narberth. For a more upscale stay, try The Grove.

I’ll be revisiting Narberth for day trips plenty more in the future and can’t wait. It’s a small but mighty town! Have you ever been? Will you go now?
