How to Stay at Uncle Bryns House in Barry (Gavin and Stacey)!

Gavin and Stacey is one of the best British TV shows ever made and now you can stay at Uncle Bryns house in Barry. Yes, the one they actually used for filming the series!

This is my complete review of staying at Uncle Bryn’s in Barry. I’m a Barry Island girl myself and I won’t lie to you, it’s genuine.

Being from Barry, I’m so proud of Gavin and Stacey. It gives me so much joy to write about this iconic and much-loved show. Me, my family and friends quote Gavin and Stacey every day. No word of a lie! I was rewatching some episodes and cried at the finale (again).

There are so many references to the show throughout the entire house. The thought that has gone in is immense. It feels like you’re actually staying over uncle Bryn’s house.

Where is Uncle Bryns House?

Address: 48 Trinity Street, Barry, CF62 7EW

The actual house they used for filming is on one of the steepest hills in Barry. But so iconic! It’s right opposite Gwen and Doris’s.

Bryn’s house was used for several scenes including:

• Uncle Bryn shows Gavin how to use the internet (Series 1, Episode 2)
• Smithy and Bryn workout in Bryn’s homemade gym (Series 2, Episode 4)
• Stacey stays at Uncle Bryn’s (Series 2, Episode 6)
• The Essex boys come to Barry and sleep over Bryn’s bachelor paradise (Series 3, Episode 3)
• Bryn calls down to Pam and Mick from his window (Series 3, Episode 5)
• Bryn has a meltdown and drops the Turkey (2019 Christmas Special)
• Many times in the finale (so emotional)

Directions to Bryns House

If you’re arriving by train, get off at Barry Station (also a filming location when Gavin’s friends arrive in Barry), take a right and walk all the way down Broad Street until you see a garage at the bottom of Trinity Street. Turn left onto Trinity Hill and keep walking all the way up. Bryns home from Gavin and Stacey is on the right.

Before The Stay

Once you’ve booked your stay you’ll get instant confirmation via email. Then you’ll get an email with the information such as accessing the key box and the rules like don’t mention the fishing trip in this house. Around check-in time I had a text to see if all went well. Tidy.

The check in was easy as the key box instructions were clear and I felt like I stepped right into a scene from the show. You’ll recognise the house instantly, wave to Gwen and Doris across the street and if not, there’s the Gone Fishin’ sign outside. Oh and there’s cinzano in the window!

Staying at Uncle Bryns House in Barry

So what’s staying at a real life Gavin and Stacey home? Just like being in the show to be fair.

There are two bedrooms, both with double beds. They are spacious with hangers for your clothes, the curtains blocked out the light, it wasn’t noisy during night, and there many plug sockets. The back bedroom felt a bit more cosy. And there’s the sofa bed in the living room just like Stacey!

The bathroom is downstairs at the back like many older houses in Barry with a shower and bath and the water is warm quickly. They provide towels that are fresh unlike Gwen and Trevor’s (god rest his soul).

The kitchen has everything you need for a weekend trip to Barry. Very clean and perfect to re-enact Bryn dropping the Turkey!

Now saving the best for last. The living room. It is the exact set up as when all the boys stay at Uncle Bryn’s in Barry. The attention to detail of Bryn’s living room was spot on like the Chelsea scarf around the lamp, the ship in glass cabinet, the subbuteo table, the lad mags, the posters, the old computer.

I won’t give it all away but look at the cork board, the clipboard and the wall in the living room. These are my favourite references in the whole house.

Facilities I Loved

• All the references of course. True fans will be there for hours laughing at it all!
• Wifi was clearly on display and it was fast and reliable throughout the whole stay
• The dvd player with the series just waiting to play (a fire stick with bbc iplayer is already on the TV too for ease)
• The books on display were a gorgeous touch! And Bryn’s James Blunt CD of course 
• The information booklet is crackin! You need to have a read through to learn about the house, the owners, the background and the rules
• There’s a washing machine which you don’t often find in accommodation
• And right next to Gwen’s omelette recipe? An omelette maker!

Things You Need to Find While There!

There are soooo many references to the show and it’s so fun to discover them all during your stay. I’m not giving anything away so for a few surprises, look in:

• The upstairs airing cupboard 
• The box in the second bedroom
• The draw next to the bed in the main bedroom
• The cabinet in the bathroom
• The main cabinet as you walk into the living room
• The computer draw
• The kitchen cabinets!!
• Find Uncle Bryn’s Picasso keyring
• Over 14 framed quotes on the wall
• Over 11 stills from the show printed and dotted around

“There’s no way you’re getting me out in Cardiff tonight”

Things to Note

• Trinity Hill, where Uncle Bryn’s home is located, is VERY steep
• Parking can be tricky as it’s a first come, first serve basis and being a terraced road, there are lots of residents’ cars
• The road is busy in general so if you’ve rented a car be mindful that you’ll be giving way/braking a fair bit
• If you’re here on a weekend you’ll see the tour which is fab and you should defo join it!! Daves Coaches will be right outside with other fans
• Mind the step though from the kitchen into the hallway. It’s hard to step into Christmas here!

The Gavin and Stacey tour is so popular and I see Dave’s Coaches packed every weekend and more in the summer. They take you to the best locations from the series and you’re guided by the brilliant Knock Off Nessa!

People who join the tour cannot enter Uncle Bryn’s house. This is exclusive for those who are staying at the house. How cool would it be to be on the tour and pop into Uncle Bryn’s while the rest of the bus can only wait outside!

Fun fact: I spent a summer being the tour guide on the Gavin & Stacey tour!

What’s Close to Uncle Bryn’s?

It’s not actually on the Island Pam, but it’s really close to Barry Island because after all, Cardiff Shmardiff. For food, there’s places nearby like Goodsheds for street food, an Italian called The Little Olive, not the one they used as that’s in Penarth. And even the KFC that they used for filming the finale.

For entertainment, you can visit The Small Space Theatre or live music at Academy (another filming location for the finale). For dancing, head to the old Dolphin now known as View 62 or Morio Lounge opposite on Barry Island.
