  4. Capital city of Wales is Cardiff. Interesting facts about Cardiff include it has been the capital since 1958 and it’s a multi-cultural city due to the Docks history. Other cities include Bangor, St Davids, Newport, Swansea, and St Asaph. 
  5. Wales is a Celtic country along with Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Isle of Man, and Brittany.
  6. The official language of the country is Welsh (which is over 4000 years old) but English is widely spoken.

  1. There used to be a royal family but Wales is now governed by the British Royal Family and the heir to the throne is titled Prince of Wales.
  2. Although Governed by Westminster, Wales does have a devolved Government, The Welsh Assembly, with headquarters at the Senedd in Cardiff. This means Wales has some different laws/legislations such as different Covid rules, Welsh people get grants for University and prescriptions are free in Wales.
  3. The Welsh language is quite difficult to learn, it is nowhere near English and made up of 29 letters (e.g. ‘LL’ is one letter and ‘FF’ is one letter).

  5. Wales is home to three National Parks: Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, and Pembrokeshire Coast.

I was raised way more Italian, but over the years, the more I learn about Wales the more I love it, and I cannot wait to visit!   3. Lots of quirky facts about Wales. My personal fav is the one stating that Welsh ventured out into the world and there’s a small community in Patagonia. I love that! I have to confess I don’t know that much of Wales, but it also has a great sense of embracing other cultures. I’m thinking of Portmeirion and it’s quirky Italian design.

I knew quite a few of them but never knew that the = sign was invented by a Welshman, that Everest is named after a Welshman and that Cardiff has been the capital only since 1958, I thought it was longer and can’t think which city was the capital before that, I enjoyed brushing up on my Welsh facts here.

  8. What a fun post! We knew some of these facts but there were some real surprises. We didn’t know that the = sign was invented by Robert Recorde. We have a great respect for Aneurin Bevan and the wonderful NHS he created. We live in the Midlands in England, so aren’t too far away, and we very much love visiting Wales. We visit regularly, in fact we were in Snowdonia and Anglesey earlier this year. It’s an outstandingly beautiful country with incredibly friendly people.
