About The Fault in Our Stars and Amsterdam
The Fault in Our Stars is a teenage love story between August Waters (Gus) and Hazel Grace Lancaster who meet at a cancer support group.
The first thing that Hazel tells Gus about herself is that her favourite novel is An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten. She is desperate to know what happens after the story ends so has emailed the author several times, to no avail. But not only does Gus get a response…
He takes Hazel on a Dutch-themed picnic (cheese, tulips, art, basketball), to tell her that he’s used his wish to take her to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten and get her answers.

Follow in the footsteps of Hazel and Augustus through Amsterdam!
1) Hotel Filosoof / The American Hotel
We see lots of shots of impressive Amsterdam on their arrival before they get to their hotel.
In The Fault in Our Stars book, Gus, Hazel and Hazel’s mum stay in Hotel Filosoof (and you see this on the email from Van Houten’s assistant).
But this hotel was not used in the film Fault in Our Stars. The actual hotel they filmed in is called the Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American located near Vondelpark.
Outside the hotel you’ll see the same fountain that is used as an exterior shot in The Fault in Our Stars film.

2) Amsterdam Canal Cruise
Known as the city of canals, you can’t visit Amsterdam without taking a canal cruise. This is exactly what Hazel and Gus do on their first day and it’s a great way to take in the scenery and iconic bridges and buildings of the city.

3) The Fault in Our Stars Restaurant
Peter Van Houten’s assistant made Hazel and Gus a reservation that evening for dinner at Oranjee. Later we see the two enjoy champagne and Chef’s choice at Oranjee.
Unfortunately, Oranjee is not a real life location but is located in the Amsterdam district of Jordaan. Bloesem was used as the restaurant for this Fault in Our Stars scene.
So although you can’t go to the actual Oranjee restaurant, you could hit up Bloesem.

I highly recommend visiting Jordaan for food. I did an Amsterdam food tour in the Jordaan area so do this if you want some Dutch food on your The Fault in Our Stars pilgrimage.

4) Rijksmuseum
After dinner, they walk through the tunnels of one of Amsterdam’s top sightseeing museums, the Rijksmuseum where the pair stop to enjoy a live orchestral band together.

5) Amsterdam Tram #4
On their second day of their trip, Hazel and Gus ride Tram #4 to visit Peter Van Houten.
The tram is so easy to navigate in Amsterdam and one of my top Amsterdam tips is using the tram to get around the city.
You’ll see lots of trams in front of Amsterdam Centraal station and if you look for route 4 you can take that one or just snap a picture of it parked up.

6) Peter’s House
Here we finally meet The Fault in Our Stars van Houten!
When Hazel and Gus arrive at Peter’s house their excitement is quickly dissolved by the sight of Peter’s cluttered house, his demand to ‘get rid of them’ and his morning scotch.
Peter is nothing like they thought and when Hazel shows her enthusiasm for his book, he shows complete dis-interest with his stupid metaphors and Swedish hip-hop music.
Never meet your hero has never been more apparent than this scene. The author that they travelled so far to meet turns out to be nothing but bitter and spiteful.
What’s beautiful is that Gus used his wish for him and Hazel Grace to be together in Amsterdam, not for Van Houten. Oh and I do love Hazel’s parting words!
The house is located right next to Vondelpark, the city’s most famous and visited (and pretty) park.

7) Anne Frank House
Peter’s kinder assistant chases after Hazel and Gus and invites them to the Anne Frank House (Peter is not invited)!
While they climb lots of stairs throughout the museum, quotes from Anne Frank’s diary can be heard playing in the background. While watching, the viewer can see the similarities in determination between Hazel and Anne. Ending with a warming kiss between Hazel and Gus, and a round of applause from other tourists.
Visiting the Anne Frank House either independently or on a guided tour, which includes walking the Jewish Quarter, is one of the top things to do in Amsterdam to see where the real Anne Frank hid from the Nazis during WWII.

8) The Fault in Our Stars Bench
The pair walk across canals and take a seat on that bench between Leidsegracht and Herengracht.
This is where Augustus Waters tells Hazel Grace Lancaster about his diagnosis and is a turning point in the story. I wept at this part of The Fault in Our Stars novel and film.
