Home Alone 2 Filming Locations in New York City

One of the most beloved Christmas films ever made is Home Alone and, in my opinion, the sequel is equally as beloved. Home Alone II: Lost in New York is a classic movie and being in New York there was no way I couldn’t see the locations.

In order of appearance, here’s over 17 Home Alone New York locations you can visit including several Home Alone Central Park locations.

Map of Home Alone 2 Locations

1) LaGuardia Airport

While the viewer knows the McCallister family are in Miami while Kevin is not, Kevin realises only when he leaves the aircraft and looks out to a city that looks like something from a movie…

The scene is filmed in La Guardia Airport in Queens.

‘What city is that over there?’ ‘That’s New York, sir’.

2) Queensboro Bridge

After Kevin arrives at LaGuardia Airport and decides to stay in New York, we see Kevin taking a famous NYC yellow cab over Queensboro bridge to get to Manhattan where he starts his adventure.

‘My family’s in Florida, I’m in New York’

3) Radio City Music Hall

Kevin is outside Radio City Music Hall marvelling at the city while the iconic ‘All Alone at Christmas’ by Darlene Love is playing. The soundtrack is excellent as it describes lots of New York City, Kevin being alone and the song is a huge reminder of this beloved Christmas movie.

This is one of my favourite Home Alone locations in New York City.

4) Empire Diner

With the song still playing, Kevin snaps pictures and speaks to a Santa Claus on stilts outside the Empire Diner. This was filmed in 1991/1992 and the diner is still there today!

5) Chinatown

We see various shots of Chinatown as the scene (and song) continues including Kevin walking out of Quong Yuen Shing & Co having just bought firecrackers. This is both a nod to the first movie and an indicator to his booby-traps later in this film.

Address: 32 Mott Street, New York, 10013

6) Battery Park

Kevin looks through binoculars out to the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park.

7) Twin Towers / World Trade Centre

The scene starts with Kevin walking up the steps of the Twin Towers, looking up and then reaching the top, looking over New York City, saying ‘wow’.

Today, you can go to the 9/11 memorial. It was one of the best things to do in NYC and a memorable experience I had when visiting.

8) Fulton Fish Market

Kevin is seen walking near Fulton Fish Market which was on South Street Seaport but moved to The Bronx after the movie was released. This is the first time we see that Harry and Marv are also in New York.

‘New York City, the land of opportunity’

9) Subway

Harry and Marv are hatching their heist as they walk up from a subway.

57 Street subway station located on 57th Street and 6th Avenue and the street from the station were used as these Home Alone 2 film locations.

‘We’re the Sticky Bandits’

10) Central Park Home Alone 2

There’s lots of Home Alone 2 Filming Locations Central Park. We first see it when Kevin is walking and first spots The Plaza Hotel (New York’s most exciting hotel experience) and runs away from the pigeon lady.

They then use Bethesda Terrace and Gapstow Bridge as Home Alone 2 Central Park locations later in the film when Kevin is running from Harry and Marv and the pigeon lady scares them into letting Kevin go respectively.

The final movie scene is also in Central Park at the Pond when Kevin gives the lady a turtle dove on Christmas morning.

If you prefer to be guided, you can take this dedicated Home Alone tour of Central Park:

11) The Plaza

Kevin arrives at The Plaza Hotel full of confidence and mischief and makes a reservation over the phone before checking in and pulling the wool over the employees’ eyes.

Kevin is walked to his room and refers to Herbert Hoover as the ‘vaccum guy’ before being corrected that it was a president. How painfully ironic that the previous scene Kevin bumps into a future president!

Kevin practices his cannon balls at the hotel pool, has full room service and watches the famous movies.

‘Two scoops sir? Two? Make it three, I’m not driving’ – I quote this daily!

A hotel room at The Plaza with an extra large bed, a TV and a mini-fridge will cost you. No wonder Kevin’s father was furious with the credit card bill!

They even have special Kevin McCallister packages which include a limousine ride around New York to see the main filming locations, a large cheese pizza like Kevin did in the limo, a huge sundae like Kevin did in room service and of course a stay at the Ding Dang Dong hotel.

12) Wollman Rink

Harry and Marv are on this iconic ice rink in Central Park when Harry comes up with the toy store robbery while Marv, as the sticky bandit, is stealing items of clothing from passing skaters.

‘Nobody’s dumb enough to knock off a toy store on Christmas Eve’

13) NYC Streets

There are several streets throughout the city that were used as Home Alone 2 New York locations.

Harry and Marv sneak up on Kevin outside Duncan’s Toy Chest and he screams before running away and the crooks chase him through the streets of New York including past 5 E 57th Street, 754 Fifth Avenue, and E 58th and Fifth Avenue (the bead scene) and W 60th and Fifth Avenue is where Kevin escapes and runs toward Central Park.

Other street and alleyways were actually filmed in Chicago.

The iconic ‘Merry Christmas ya filthy animal’ scene was filmed back at The Plaza hotel before Kevin runs away.

‘What kind of idiots do you have working here’ ‘The finest in New York’

14) Carnegie Hall

While Kevin is running away from Harry and Marv, he enters Central Park again and meets the pigeon lady who he then bonds with in the attic of Carnegie Hall. It’s the calm before the carnage…

‘I’ve heard the world’s great music from here’

15) Columbia University Teacher’s Building

This New York building on Broadway was used as the Children’s hospital where Kevin walks past and sees poorly children in the window and decides to stop the sticky bandits with his traps once again.

Address: 525 W 120th Street.

‘You can mess with a lot of things but you can’t mess with kids on Christmas’

16) Times Square

We see shots of popular Times Square at night before Kate is running around asking strangers if they’ve seen Kevin before pleading with police officers.

‘I need to get to Rockefeller Centre’

17) Rockefeller Centre / Plaza

Kevin and his mother, Kate, finally reunite outside the huge Christmas Tree when Kate realises that is where Kevin would be in New York City. The scene echoes the reunion scene in the first Home Alone movie.

This is one of the best places to visit in New York at Christmas and you can see the same Christmas tree Home Alone 2 used for filming.

‘What is it with you and Christmas trees?’

Not Filmed in New York

Notable places from the movie that were in “New York” were actually filmed in Chicago like Duncan’s Toy Chest, some of the alleyways, the hotel where the rest of the McCallister family stay, and Uncle Rob’s house is actually a purpose-built set in LA (although in the movie, the New York address is 51st West and 95th Street).

That’s a wrap!
