Seafood Sundays in UK with The Happy Days Travels | Summer 2020

I never thought I’d be in the UK in 2020 let alone writing an entire post about Seafood Sundays in UK summer 2020! But, Covid hit, I came back from Oz in March 2020 for lockdown and here we are.

After 4 months of lockdown, I couldn’t wait to explore somewhere, anywhere! I knew international travel wasn’t happening so I decided to jump on the staycation wagon and explore my country of Wales and neighbouring England. One of my best friends and I share a love (obsession) for seafood, fish and Rick Stein’s Long Weekends so we naturally choose seafood dishes when we eat out together (which is quite often a Sunday). And so Seafood Sundays in Summer 2020 was born.

I want to share with you some of the best seafood dishes I’ve enjoyed this summer part of seafood Sundays and just in general because, hey, we’re all in the same random content boat aren’t we.

UK Seafood Sundays in Summer 2020

In chronological order, here’s some pictures and descriptions of the delicious seafood I had after lockdown in the UK and where you can go to get yours.

Bristol’s San Carlo

Seafood Pasta at San Carlo Summer 2020

The first meal after 4 months of UK lockdown was at a gorgeous Italian restaurant in Bristol called San Carlo. A local must in Bristol, they have a sister restaurant in Manchester to visit too!

Seafood Sundays started here and raised the bar high.

Address: San Carlo, 44 Corn Street, Bristol, BS1 1HQ

Bath’s Pintxo

Pinxtos in Bath England Tapas Food

The following week, I visited Bath in West of England and stumbled upon one of the nicest Tapas restaurants outside of Spain. But it’s not Tapas here, it’s actually called Pintxo and from an area of Spain called San Sebastian.

Dishes included Garlic Prawns, Meatballs, Calamari, Patatas Bravas, Hummus, Manchego, Peppers with Cod and Mash, Wild Mushroom Croquettes, Chorizo Croquettes and famous Pedron peppers. Yum.

P.s. There were three of us, so I didn’t have ALL this to myself!

Address: 31 Barton St, Bath BA1 1HG

Penarth’s Ego

Paella from Ego in Penarth Wales

Penarth in South Wales opened a new restaurant called Ego, claiming themselves as a Mediterranean restaurant so one evening, my friend and I were buzzing for a Paella which is a Meditteranean dish and any restaurant claiming to serve Mediterranean-style food should have the best Paella. Unfortunately, this was no such place. The paella may look great in this photo but it wasn’t cooked enough (rice or mussels, MUSSELS!, weren’t cooked properly) and it was unseasoned.

I’m up for giving the restaurant another go as I’ve heard other good reviews about it but I won’t be going for a Seafood Sunday there again.

Neyland’s The Alumchine

Seafood Pasta at The Alchemine in Neyland. Pasta on White Bowl a Bird's Eye View

My favourite food in the world is pasta. But my favourite dish is seafood spaghetti! I make the best prawn linguini but I always try seafood pasta dishes when I’m out because they have a variation of seafood I wouldn’t cook for myself like mussels or scallops.

The Alumchine in Neyland, Pembrokeshire was a delight and a totally random find on a road trip! Part of a yacht club and looking out to sea, it’s only right you get seafood.

Narberth’s Fforc

Fforc Narberth Lobster Roll

When visiting Narbeth, the most independent town in Wales, I went to a great Welsh Deli where EVERYTHING was locally sourced and Welsh-produced! So for breakfast being the boujie gal I am, I had a delicious Lobster Roll where the lobster melted with the warm bread and cold salad. Stunning!

Barry Island’s Finnegans Chippy

Cod Fish and Chips and Sausage in Batter from Barry Island Finnegan's Chippy

There’s a fab restaurant/pub on Barry Island called Finnegans Inn and this summer they opened the doors to a brand new chippy next door and they have come through with the goods!

This is exactly the chippy we need on Barry Island because it has proper, homemade chips, the trimmings as requested from locals, open everyday except for Christmas and open to late. Finnegans is my favourite place for fish and chips now because the fish is honestly the best and I’ll be having more Seafood Sundays here!

Seafood Sundays in Chain Restaurants

The Happy Days Travels is all about staying local with small businesses and independent restaurants but there’s two places I visited this Summer for Seafood Sundays and I’ve had to explain my love for them. They both provide dishes and flavours from other parts of the globe: Caribbean and Japanese so I love getting global food, locally.

Bristol’s Turtle Bay

Fish Fry at Turtle Bay in Bristol England for Seafood Sundays

Turtle Bay has stormed the UK with its Caribbean food, 2-4-1 cocktails and bottomless brunch offer!

I had the dish Fish Fry which includes crispy salmon, panko squid, spiced fries, jerk mayo & lime for £13.20. Oh my days, thank you.

Cardiff’s Wagamamas

Cardiff Wagamamas Restaurant
Prawns, Gyozas, Chilli Squid, Edamame and Cauliflower Bang Bang. LOL at the Edamame we had to try before the picture!

Wagamamas is another UK chain restaurant that is so delicious it deserves to be on my Seafood Sunday list! A friend and I had an array of starter/side dishes into our own tapas-style and it’s the best way to enjoy Japanese food (except Ramen, obvs).

I judge you if you waste Wagamama time by ordering Chicken Katsu.

  1. Oh nooooo…. undercooked mussels! Eek… Not good! I adore moules – could eat them day in, day out, and do so when I’m in Belgium! But oh dear… this place was clearly not the place to go. Will bare that in mind when in Penarth again. I had a delightful meal out in Penarth a few years back on my birthday – was fabulous. Can remember where it is, but unfortunately not the restaurant name. It was superb food though! You’ve got me craving mussels now! he he.

    1. Haha I agree Tilly… enjoying Mussels in Brussels is one of my top foodie things to do! Ah there are some fabulous places in Penarth to eat which I can’t wait to get back to in the summer. I am craving mussels too!
