Depot Street Food Social: The Coronavirus Safeguarding

I was SO impressed with the way Depot have handled Covid-19 measures! From start to finish you feel safe, distanced and hygienic. I now know why they’ve been called Cardiff’s safest event! Some things to note:

  • There is a constant one-way system throughout the venue. One entrance and one exit.
  • Temperature and details for Track & Trace taken on arrival.
  • Table assigned and shown to the table by a member of staff.
  • Staff wear masks at all times.
  • Once at your table you stay the entire time thanks to QR codes, staff and bank cards.
  • You need a device to scan the QR code to access the menus to the traders and Depot bar where you order through the website, inputting your card details.
  • I didn’t receive any cutlery with my food which is why I’m so glad I took my own eco-friendly cutlery with me.
  • I’m a firm believer in tipping and when paying, you get the option of adding 10%, customised price or rounding up. This is why some prices are higher than the menu below.

Now for the juicy details…

What I Got for £30 at Street Food Social Cardiff

These were the local traders to choose from: Brother Thai, Sushi Life, Bearded Taco, Bao Selecta, The Fork Society, Ffwrnes, Meating Point, Franks, Artisan Crepes.

No wonder whittling down what to have was so difficult! I do love a Street Food market.

Depot

Through the app you see every stall has its own page with information and menu. The Depot is the first place to browse to get a drink! They have cocktails, wine, worldly beers on draught and bottles available.

We had a pint of Staropramen (Czech Republic) and half an Estrella (Barcelona, Spain).

Cost: £7.30
Left: £22.70

Bearded Taco

All along I was saying I was definitely going to have a bun from Bao Selecta but after debating between that and Bearded Taco, the latter won. I absolutely loved the story behind Bearded Taco, the van in which they’re made and the blended flavours from different cuisines.

Better Call Seoul won me with its Korean BBQ Pork and homemade kimchi slaw. Oh wow… reminds me of eating out in Melbourne! It was both crunchy and succulent and the portion size was enough for two of us to share and this was a major pro!

Cost: £6.60
Left: £16.10

Bao Selecta is first on my list for next time!

Brother Thai

I’m a little bit obsessed with Thailand and when I seen this in the Street Food Social line-up, it was a must for my challenge! They have just four options and even they were hard to choose from but I eventually decided on the Sticky Spicy Beef Roti and, oh my!

It wasn’t the roti I imagined, it was more of a thin pasty, flaky but soft with the filling oozing out.

This was a dish I needed my reusable, eco-friendly cutlery for to enjoy the filling alone as well as in the roti.

Cost: £7.80
Left: £8.30

Franks

Last up is a good ol’ hot dog, classic American street food with a proper sausage! The choice was The Cheese Dip Bacon Dog.

Cost: £7.80
Left: £0.50

P.S. I loved the sound of their Cheese Fries if you fancy an accompaniment to your dawg.
