Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun On A Thursday | Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s trendy neighbourhood of Kreuzberg is renowned as the multi-cultural hub of Berlin and as always, the food reflects this diversity, especially in this food market hall. I visited Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun on a Thursday because this is Street Food night and the best market to visit in Berlin for worldly and tasty street food. This is one of the best Kreuzberg things to do.

Markthalle Neun In Kreuzberg for Street Food

So is it worth visiting Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg? Indeed, it is! The indoor market transforms into a Street Food haven every Thursday and gets very busy. I researched this place before my weekend in Berlin and I booked specific flights that ensured I was there for Markthalle Neun’s Street Food Thursdays!

  • Every Thursday, 5pm-10pm (Some stalls run out of food by 9pm)
  • Toilets are 50c
  • It’s less fresh produce or flea market and more cooked Kreuzberg food market
  • Vegan and Vegetarian friendly market. For more Berlin vegan options, check out Rebecca’s guide here.
  • if you’re looking for a flea market Kreuzberg has one just 15 minutes from Markthalle Neun called Flohmarkt Marheinekeplatz
  • It should be one of your top Berlin things to do 😉

Getting To Markthalle Neun, Berlin Kreuzberg

Markthalle Neun is well located in the Kreuzberg district near Gorlitzer Park and East Side Gallery and close to public transport. Close transport stops are: Schlesisches Tor and U Görlitzer Bahnhof.

The market was very close to my accommodation in Kreuzberg so I walked with excitement to Street Food Thursday! On your way to this Berlin weekly market, look out for the Markthalle sign that looks like it’s made from scrabble pieces and you’ve arrived (see above).

Note: You cannot take your own food or drink into Markthalle Kreuzberg, so we bought a few Kreuzberg beers and enjoyed them near the market when the sun was setting before we devoured the food Kreuzberg Markt had to offer.

There’s food on offer at the market from all over the world, think of this as a Spanish market, Turkish market, Middle Eastern food market, German organic market. My top tip for visiting would be to do a few laps of the venue to make mental notes of potential things to try later (this list gets long so choose wisely).

There’s communal seating jotted around the hall and it’s fun when everyone at the table is eating something from different stalls. My very best food experiences around the world have been had at communal tables such as Khao Soi in Chiang Mai and Street Food in Penang, Malaysia.

I have to warn you, Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun on a Thursday gets busy! There’s a cool blend of tourists and locals though and the hustle and bustle is my favourite things about local markets like this, you just can’t beat that natural rush and shared excitement in the air.

I love looking to the left at what your neighbour’s eating but being distracted by the aromas coming from the food stalls behind you! I love it!

Strolling through Markthalle Kreuzberg, you can walk down an aisle and feel like you’ve been transported to the Middle East through their stalls such as Turkish and Lebanese food. How about sampling some Indian snacks, French cheese or a traditional German currywurst!

My Personal Recommendation

Try 4 types of meatballs from different places of the world that start with the letter B: Bangkok, Berlin, Bologna and Bombay! I tried all four and they were each so flavoursome and represented the countries from which they originated. I ate these on a small tray at a standing table across the way. Definitely the way to enjoy snacks at a street food market.

The main act of Thursdays is the street food but don’t forget about the craft beer on offer too. So skip the run-of-the-mill Kreuzberg restaurant on a Thursday and head straight to Markthalle Neun for the best Kreuzberg restaurants.

Best Place to Stay in Kreuzberg Berlin

My accommodation in Kreuzberg was everything I look for in a European weekend trip! I stayed in Apartmenthouse Berlin – Am Görlitzer Park. It was quite a pricey hotel but so close (about 10 minutes walk) to Markthalle Neun that it was worth it for this activity alone. For a three night stay it was €276,53 per room. One of the benefits of travelling with someone is we split this cost in half so was around €46 per person, per night.

Reception is open between 10am and 7pm and if there’s a late check in, they will arrange a key safe for you.

Reception were so friendly and helpful here, giving us a free map of the city and specific instructions for getting the local public bus that cost us just 50c! There’s a communal area inside and out where you can meet others so has a hostel feeling in that sense but your private room retains the hotel feel. Oh, and it comes with a small kitchen.

Find your dates and prices to stay at Apartmenthouse Berlin Am Gorlitzer Park.

Visiting Markthalle Neun on a Thursday is the best thing to do in Kreuzberg, Berlin and one of the top things to do in Berlin as a whole!
