All Harry Potter Oxford Locations
I have listed the Harry Potter filming locations Oxford in a way that you can follow your self-guided tour around the city. Under each heading of the place is the scene that was filmed, handy tips, opening hours, ticket prices and a fun quote.
Bodleian Library
There are three Harry Potter locations in Bodleian Library: Duke Humfrey’s Library, Divinity School and Earl of Pembroke Statue.
These are the Harry Potter film locations Oxford that I urge you to book in advance because I went all the way to Oxford and they were sold out for the entire day!
The three Harry Potter locations in Bodleian Library are:
- Duke Humfrey’s Library where Harry visits the library under his cloak of invisibility in Philosopher’s Stone
- Divinity School where all hospital Harry Potter Oxford scenes were filmed and the Yule Ball dance practice scene
- Earl of Pembroke Statue is a likeness to one of the ghost characters
Entry to Bodleian Library
You can only see Duke Humfrey’s Library with a guided tour for 30 mins (£12.50), 60 mins (£17.50) or 90 mins (£22.50). Tours go on sale exactly one month prior.
Each tour includes Duke Humfrey’s Library and Divinity School so you can see Hogwarts Library and Hospital Wing in one visit. Note: Booking a Bodleian Library tour is the only way to see the Harry Potter library filming location in Oxford.
Bodleian Library entrance fee is £3 per person but make sure you pre-book! Otherwise book a tour for guaranteed entry as long as it’s open. I didn’t do this and wasn’t able to see two of these Harry Potter filming locations.
If you don’t mind skipping the library part, you can visit the Divinity School where the Harry Potter Hospital is filmed.
Entrance to Divinity School costs £3 (plus £1 transaction fee). You must pre-book your 15 minute time slot here to guarantee entry as this Harry Potter Oxford College will be sold out on the day.
Bodleian Library Opening Hours
– Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
– Saturday, 10am-5pm
– Sunday, 11am-4pm
There are notable closures in 2026. See them all here.
Duke Humfrey’s Library in Harry Potter
- This is one of the oldest libraries in England dating back to 1447. It was only used for one library scene in the first film when Harry sneaks in under his invisibility cloak to the restricted section and almost caught by Filch.
- The library was closed for filming this one scene and they never filmed here again afterwards.
- ‘There’s a student out of bed’
Divinity School as the Hospital in Harry Potter

- If you’re wondering where is the hospital filmed in Harry Potter? Visit Divinity School in Oxford where all the hospital Harry Potter scenes in Oxford were filmed.
- In Philosopher’s Stone near the end of the film when Harry wakes up and is greeted by Dumbledore.
- In Chamber of Secrets we see Madam Pomfrey run into the room to re-grow Harry’s bones and Dobby visits Harry. Throughout the film, the location is used for scenes where students have been petrified.
- In Prisoner of Azkaban when Hermione uses her time-turner to transport herself and Harry back to meddle time for the greater good.
- In Half-Blood Prince when Ron is in hospital after accidentally drinking poison from Professor Slughorn.
‘She should be out of hospital in a few days… when she stops coughing up fur balls’
Divinity School in Goblet of Fire

- The exact room that is used as the hospital in Harry Potter is where McGonagell taught the students how to dance ahead of the Yule Ball. Ron has to dance with his professor and is mocked for it by his twin brothers. One of those embarrassing school moments he’ll never live down.
‘The Yule Ball is first and foremost, a dance’
Earl of Pembroke Statue

- For a completely free Harry Potter location in Oxford, look directly in front of the entrance to the Divinity School.
- Look familiar? This is a statue of the Earl of Pembroke and doesn’t it look remarkably like Nearly Headless Nick aka John Cleese.
- In the books, he’s described as having curly hair, wearing a doublet, a plumed hat, and a tunic with a ruff. Quite like the Earl.
‘This hallowe’en will be my FIVE HUNDREDTH DEATHDAY’
New College
You’ll find two Harry Potter locations in New College Oxford: Cloister Quad and New College Tree.
New College Entry
Entrance to New College ticket is £12. I was able to buy a ticket on arrival but I recommend booking in advance for guaranteed entry.
New College Opening Hours
– Monday – Sunday, 10am – 4.30pm from 10th March – 31st October 2026
There are several college closure dates in 2026 and many dates where the hall/chapel are closed. For a full list of known New College closures, see here.
The two Harry Potter locations in New College are:
- Cloisters that were used as Harry Potter Corridors in Goblet of Fire
- The New College Tree where Draco was turned into a ferret in Goblet of Fire.
Cloister Quad in Goblet of Fire

- As you enter New College, turn left and you’ll see a sign for Chapel and Cloisters and it’s here you can walk the very same hallways as the Hogwarts students.
- When Harry is walking through the Hogwarts corridors, other students are wearing ‘Potter Stinks’ badges before he approaches Cedric Diggory to warn him about dragons in the first Triwizard Tournament task.
‘Dragons. That’s the first task’
New College Tree in Goblet of Fire

- Located within the courtyard of New College Cloisters is an oak tree that has become known as the Harry Potter tree.
- Draco Malfoy jumps down from the tree to argue with Harry before Mad-Eye Moody transforms him into a ferret. Professor McGonnagal steps in to berate Moody and transform Draco back to his human self.
- When I visited, the courtyard was cornered off for the public so I couldn’t actually step onto the grass or get close to the tree.

‘I’ll teach you to curse someone when their back is turned’
Christ Church College
You’ll find three Harry Potter locations in Christ Church college: Bodley Staircase, Cloisters and Dining Hall.
The three Harry Potter locations in Christ Church College are:
- Bodley Staircase where the students first arrive at Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone and where Filch catches Harry and Ron arriving by car in Chamber of Secrets
- Cloisters which are the hallways of Hogwarts and where Hermione shows Harry and Ron the trophy cabinet where James Potter’s name is on a Quidditch trophy
- Dining Hall said to be the inspiration for the Great Hall in all Harry Potter movies
Entry to Christ Church College
My Christ Church College entrance ticket was £12.50 on a Saturday in March. I wanted to buy a ticket on arrival but it was fully booked so I had to book one a few hours later. This is one of the most popular Harry Potter Oxford University spots.
Therefore, I highly recommend booking an Oxford Harry Potter tour in advance. You can also save money by booking in advance. You can book a tour that includes the entry fee.

Ticket prices change according to the day/time of year, as follows for aged 18-64:
– £24.50 on weekdays and £26.50 on weekends outside term time (22 March – 18 April 2026, 28 June – 3 October 2026, 13 – 31 December 2026)

Bodley Staircase in Philosopher’s Stone

- The first year students leave the boat and enter the staircase where Professor McGonnagell is watching them from the top of the stairs.
- In Christchurch College, if you head to #3 on the list, you’ll find this iconic filming location
- The shot looking up towards minerva, you can see the intricate ceiling as pictured.
‘Welcome to Hogwarts’
Bodley Staircase in Chamber of Secrets

- After driving the flying car to Hogwarts, Harry and Ron drop their luggage at the bottom of the staircase and are met by Filch at the top of the stairs having missed the welcome assembly.
- When Tom Riddle shows Harry his memory of the last time the Chamber of Secrets was open, the memory shows a body being carried down these stairs and Dumbledore and Riddle discuss Hogwarts closure.
‘Oh dear, we are in trouble’
Dining Hall

- Through the doors of the staircase is the dining hall said to be the inspiration for the movie’s great hall and you can instantly see why with the four rectangular tables that span the entire room, representing the four houses
- So not an actual shooting location but the inspiration for the film makers is clear
‘The ceiling isn’t real. It’s bewitched to look like the night sky. I read about in Hogwarts, A History’
Cloisters in Philosopher’s Stone

- At #21 on the audio-guided map, you’ll find the Cloisters. They are at the very end of the guided tour and again are instantly recognisable at the hallways of Hogwarts.
- In Philosopher’s Stone, Hermione takes Harry and Ron to a hallway full of trophy cabinets and shows them the shield on which the Seeker for Gryffindor was James Potter (Harry’s late father).
‘You won’t make a fool of yourself. It’s in your blood’

EXCLUSIVE! There are actually THREE lightning bolts outside the building not just the one.

How to find lightning bolt outside Sheldonian Theatre: Looking directly at the entrance door, move to the right about four squared tiles along and you’ll find the first one. Keep going to the right, and you’ll see the second bolt. More further and on a larger tile is the third Harry Potter scar outside Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford.

The museum held tsantsa also known as shrunken heads and were featured in Harry Potter movies.
