Where is Kananaskis?
Kananaskis Country is a beautiful area in the Canadian province of Alberta neighbouring places like Canmore and Calgary.
The population is just over 200 and covers an area of 4000 square kilometres. It is one of the best places to see bears, has incredible mountains and lakes and was the home of the 1988 Winter Olympics!
Kananaskis has also been a filming location for TV shows like The Last of Us and films like The Revenant.
How To Get To Kananaskis
You will need a pass if you’re stopping anywhere within Kananaskis which you can get at any of the visitor/information centres.
Calgary to Kananaskis takes 1 hour by car via Highway 1.
Banff to Kananaskis takes 30 minutes via the highway or 2/2.5 hours via Canmore and Smith Dorrien Highway. The latter is way more scenic and the best chance to see wildlife.
Canada Essentials

Coverwise is reliable, cheap, has straightforward policies that are emailed and kept on file and the website is easy to navigate. Find quotes for your travel insurance with Coverwise here.
- Pack – Ensure you’ve packed the essential clothes including layers, waterproofs and hiking gear, first aid kits, and make room for souvenirs.
- Do I need bear spray in Kananaskis?– YES! This is an important addition when hiking in Alberta to protect yourself. You can buy it or rent it in nearby towns or cities. Note: you cannot take this on an airplane with you as it is classed as a weapon.
- Grab a Lonely Planet Guide, a map and maybe a hiking book for the area!
- Find your tours via Viator.

My Experience
After a day of exploring Kananaskis (including seeing a bear!!), we checked in to Sundance Lodge Alberta about 4pm equipped with our own bbq stove, boujie food from Save-On deli counters, s’mores components, beers and games!
We booked a Trappers Tent purposefully on the edge of the campsite (plot 14) so we were away from other campers. We had SO much space to ourselves like so:
We had the tent itself with a canope and wooden bench, then an empty area that could’ve fit another tent, a separate picnic bench and fire pit to ourselves and space for the car (and then some).
The room itself was cosy. We pushed the four beds together in one long row and listened to a scary audiobook when we eventually went to bed. There is a heater in the accommodation but we didn’t need it as the tent was warm enough.
We saw cheeky chipmunks and barking birds, saw amazing views of the stars and heard the evergreen quietness of a forest. That is, until we were in bed and it was like a monsoon had hit – the rain was pounding on the tent but made for an atmospheric ambience.
It was such an incredible stay doing the camping usuals, I’d go back in a second to the best camping in Kananaskis.
