Snowmobiling in Canada: Explained!

A snowmobile is a motorised vehicle with skis on the front and a powerful engine that will take you up mountains. Anyone can drive one but it’s best to go on a guided tour for your first time.

Snowmobiling history goes back to the early 1900s when it was invented in Canada and uses to motorise vehicles to travel between places in Canada on snow. Today it’s considered a sport, a popular Winter and adrenalin-filled activity that is used on open terrain or dedicated trails.

Did you know? It’s also known as ‘Ski-Doo’ or ‘Ski-Dooing’ because of the popular brand Ski-Doo that is on most Snowmobile vehicles. Like Hoover or Rizzla.

Best Snowmobiling Gear

You must be suitably equipped for this activity. This is what you’ll need to join a tour:

  • Snowmobiling jackets – This can be you ski jacket or any Winter jacket. Make sure it’s waterproof.
  • Snowmobiling pants – Same as the jackets, you can wear your ski pants or any waterproof pants
  • Snowmobiling boots – The key to the right boots are the height, make sure your ankle is covered, at least. Ensure your boots are waterproof and can withstand cold. Basically if you have proper Winter boots, they will do. I wore my trusty Ugg Winter Boots which have lasted me the entire Canadian Winter! Also, the tour I did had spare boots available if we needed them.
  • Waterproof gloves – The best snowmobiling gloves are waterproof, thick and versatile so you can move your fingers for accelerator/brake.
  • Snowmobiling goggles – Any type of goggles will do that will keep your eyes protected and protect you from the snow, especially as you’ll be driving.
  • Snowmobiling backpacks – These are optional. I didn’t take one because I had no need for them, we were on a guided tour and the guides had backpacks with any essentials.
  • Helmets for Snowmobiling – These will be provided for you as your ski/snowboard helmets will not suffice. For this activity, you need proper gear and the helmets look like motorbike helmets.

British Columbia, known as BC, is the Western-most province in Canada, home to the Rocky Mountains, gateway to the pacific ocean and a place with high altitude. It has dozens of mountains, high terrain, a long Winter (but not as cold as other places in Canada), and heaps of snow.

Snowmobiling in Whistler is a particularly popular place to try because it’s a busy ski resort, always has tourists and full of tours to choose from!

This is like riding a quad bike on dirt paths or jet skis on the ocean except you’re driving a massive vehicle on the snow made for slopes! Who wouldn’t want the chance to drive this unique vehicle?!

Plus you’re doing the Canada snowmobiling tours in the mountains!!

2. It’s a Unique Winter Activity

Visiting a place like Canada, you expect the snow-capped mountains, ice skating on frozen lakes, skiing, snowboarding and hiking.

What you don’t expect are the underrated, and unknown things to do in Canada in Winter like snowshoeing, finding frozen waterfalls, witnessing frozen ice bubbles and snowmobiling. So choose to do this if you want to go home with a hidden gem under your belt!

3. Snowmobiling Canada: The Views Are Incredible

Canada is stunning. There’s no two ways about it. But when you go snowmobiling in BC you get the incredible opportunity to get views from the snowmobiling trails that you couldn’t get anywhere else or by doing any other activity. You also get to explore terrain that you couldn’t do in any other way and at any other time.

And the views are amazing. Wherever you are going snowmobiling B.C has the goods! Think ski slopes, mountains, forests, wildlife, inversions and looking down on towns. Not only that, on some tours you get the chance to see hidden frozen waterfalls, hidden frozen rivers and short hiking paths.

4. It’s Reasonably-Priced

Everything in Canada is expensive. No joke, everything!

So when you go to book a snowmobiling getaway you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn it’s not going to break the bank. This is relative to what you get, of course.

Ye, it’s a few hundred bucks (on average $100 an hour) but this includes the vehicle rental, gear rental, snowmobiling tips, directions, a fully-guided snowmobiling adventure and all the other reasons on this list 😉

When you weigh it all up, it’s actually a reasonable amount to spend on such a cool activity!

5. You Have The Option To Share or Go Solo

Whether you want to ride the mountains on your own snowmobile or share the driving with someone else so you get time to enjoy the views and be chauffeured along the trail, most snowmobiling destinations let you choose!

6. You’re With a Guide the Whole Way

Before you begin, you’ll be taken through the snowmobiling basics, snowmobiling facts and snowmobiling safety tips including the correct gear from the crew. They will also show you the signals they use on the route to stop, go, turn engine off, etc.

Once you start, you get to do a few laps of the practice run to get you used to using the vehicle which is so helpful to get a feel for what you’re doing.

Then the whole tour your guide stays with you and if it’s a large group, you’ll have more than one guide riding in front and behind the group who will help with turns, directions and if you fall (we fell off ours haha)!

7. You Have So Much Fun!!
