If you are looking to cool down from the heat, drink some of Thailandās best coffee, buy some local tea as a great Thai gift, get some work done or just reflect on your day, then you need to experience Thai cafe culture in some of the best cafes in Santitham, Chiang Mai.
I went to one of the cafes below almost every day in an off the beaten path area of Chiang Mai and truly enjoyed the peaceful cafe culture.Ā The following list is ideal for work cafes and cafes for coffee lovers in aĀ lesser-known neighbourhood of Chiang Mai.
Speciality Coffee in Chiang Mai
Akha Ama Cafe
A famous spot for coffee lovers, Akha Ama has everything you need to enjoy cafe time. It has friendly staff, air conditioning, plenty of space and most importantly, good coffee! A huge factor about Akha Ama Cafe is that they serve you coffee without using any plastic at all!
The products come from the Akha people in Thailand who grow Arabica coffee beans (the most sought after bean in the world) and the idea for the cafe came from one mother (Ama) from a family of the Akha people. To read more about Akha Ama, you can visit their dedicated website. I worked on my laptop while drinking a 60 Baht iced coffee in, what I think, one of the best cafes in Chiang Mai. There’s also an Akha Ama Cafe located in the old city.

Mac Cafe
With inspiring quotes from none other than Steve Jobs on the wall, this is the perfect creative space. It is Mac inspired with a room full of Mac computers for sale and they also offer repair work for Macs. If youāre just looking for some drinks or snacks, it is a comfortable place to enjoy just that. I had the scrambled eggs for 79 Baht with one of the nicest iced coffees in town (for 70 baht, which is more expensive but worth it). Itās also a cool work space with plugs, clear tables and air con available.

Banilah Cafe AKA Cat Cafe
This is a great cafe with quirky additions and the cheapest coffee Iāve had in Santitham. I paid 25 baht for a Thai coffee with jelly (yes, with jelly). They offer books for you to read and itās always a good idea to take a book and leave another. I picked up a book to read and they kindly let me take it away. It has a cosy feel especially if you want to watch a DVD that is available with sofas to chill with the cats. There are lots of cats in this cafe and I had to leave after an itchy throat and sneezing alot. If you love petting cats, it’s the perfect cafe for you. Thereās also a shelf full of leaflets for tours you can experience while in Chiang Mai as well as handmade soaps for sale. For a small cafe, there’s a lot on offer here. Check it out!

Cute Coffee Shops
Aom Cafe
The most peaceful cafe I have been to in Santitham (and Iāve been to cafes in Santitham almost every day). I recommend the caramel latte (pictured below) for 55 baht, it comes in a glass jar and looks as good as it tastes. Thereās two floors and upstairs is a quieter space with a homely feel (be sure to remove footwear before going in). I noticed there were a few students who used this space to study and charge their devices (Santitham is close to the University).

Karn Coffee and Bakery
This friendly, small cafe welcomes you with a spray of water as you walk in (itās for the plants they grow surrounding the cafe). Thereās pastries, food and beverages available and free water with your purchase. I had an iced espresso (as per) for 45 baht. This is a cafe that is a short walk to reach from the central Santitham area but a cool rest stop nonetheless.
Sirithorn Road, Chang Phuak, Muang district, Chiang Mai 50300

Moom La Moon
Hidden away from the busier main streets, Moom La Moon can be found down an alley close to Thanin Market. It has a bigger outside space than inside and a blend of vintage and modernity. This cafe offers beverages as well as food such as toast and croissants.

Quirky Cafes in Santitham, Chiang Mai
Wii Cafe Proactive
Fancy a cuppa while waiting for your bike to be fixed? Go to Wii Cafe which is a cafe and a bike repair shop in one! Fans cooling you down, chilled music playing and a grey kitten following you, this cafe screams cool. They have an initiative too that if you bring your own cup you can get a discount on beverages. I learned this after Iād come in the first time where I had a coconut iced coffee for 65 baht and it came in a plastic cup with a free biscuit. This cafe has plugs for you to charge your devices too.

Slee(p) Hostel and Cafe
Somewhere you can use as accommodation, a cafe and a bar, Slee(p) is located in close proximity to the old city but remains in Santitham. The modern interior and chilled music of this cafe epitomise the cool cafe culture of Chiang Mai. There is a sheltered outside area looking out to the busy road where you can watch the world go by. It has an array of alcohol available too and by night the kind staff will mix a refreshing cocktail.
